No offence to Slomojo or anything but I wouldn't buy that factory trac lock lsd unit. While it may be in good shape now it's a good chance it wont be for too long. I especially wouldn't if you plan to keep the truck for a while. I know he is trying to be nice and help out and thats really nice of him but you should get something somwhere else. They don't seem to hold up long when new. I surely wouldn't put a used one in.

As for a open carrier just keep looking on PS and here and maybe Pirate 4x4 and Dodgetrucks.org. All have classifieds just keep looking.

I honestly don't think a LSD is worth the money for you. It's nice to have and I'd rather have one but for $50 or so vs $400 or so for a setup that may not last I'd probably be inclined to spend the $50. You don't do serious racing with a ton of power to where it's going to be horrible hooking. Atleast not now. You don't offroad it. I just don't see why you would need a LSD unless you just want it.

I think the open carrier would be a lot cheaper then if it does blow up you lost $50 instead of $400.

Hometheaterman, I agree with you on the LSD thing from me to a certain extent but not on everything.

Since 01360's housing is in decent shape, I wouldn't have him take the whole axel unless he really wanted the entire thing, which he most likely wouldn't seeing as how it's close to 400 for just shipping. I would just send out the carrier which weighs around 50lbs and costs between 50 and 100 bucks for shipping and I wouldn't ask for a dime. I got this thing for free, and I can get rid of it the same way. Only reason why I asked for 50 bucks for the whole rear end on top of shipping is because I would have to put that thing in a crate, drive it at least 20 miles to send it out, and lift that heavy sucker all around while doing it.

If 01360 gets a open carrier in good shape and resuses most of his internals, great. I would be happy to see this story end like that. But if this guy is out a truck for the next month until he finds one that'll work, so long as 01360 checked the LSD I can send him every time he changes his oil like I suggested before, he shouldn't have a problem with it so long as he finds a solid replacement for it as soon as he saves up to get a new high quality carrier or whatever.

Slomojo, was that your trac-lok? Or was that from a different ram. Also, if the guy on pavementsucks.com doesn't follow through with me in the next day, is that open carrier from your axle still an option for you to send out to me.
The carrier I got available to send is a trac lok. Only open carrier I got is the original that came with my truck, so no goes on that one, sorry.

So other than the bearings and seal kit, I just need some new thrust washers for the side gears. Would I just go to a napa type place and ask for thrust washers for a 9.25 axle? Or is that just a generic washer I pick up.
Yup, you'll only need thrust washers so long as everything is interchangable like it should be. They might just be a dealer item. Try newmoparparts.com... That's one of the best places to get genuine Mopar parts that I know of. They got great prices compared to the local stealers around here and they're even competitive with the local parts stores.

Ok thank you guys for all of your help. Think I know where I'm headed now. The guy on pavementsucks got back to me, he said he'll know by tonight if he has the open carrier available. He says it only has 25,000 miles on it, so that's good. I guess in this siutation I'll just go with the open carrier, it's $50. I guess I really don't need an LSD particulary either. I don't have enough h/p to NEED one, and I hardly go mudding as well. Slomojo thanks for offering your LSD, and if I do need it forsome reason, I know I can go to you, so thanks, I know you didn't have to offer that unit to me. I'll let ya guys know when I have the truck at my house and have the open carrier etc. I'll take lots of pictures as well for fun. Thanks again everybody

The reason I got mine was for improved traction in the winter time. What a differene it made too over the open diff my truck came with.

Yeah I agree here you are being super nice offering it for free. Not many guys like this left. I was just saying I'd hate to pay money to have something put in my truck that may go out again in 6 months. If he just needs something to hold him over a few months until he gets a good unit this may be a good way to go. I'm not trying to down you or it at all as you are being super nice offering it to him. I'm glad the world still has some people like you left in it.
