Default Goodbye Ugly Tailgate Plastic

An update to yesterdays Dental Floss / Debadging Post.

Yesterday I was here

The Tail gate plastic piece.
This is a lot harder to do. The tape is different & will not come off easy. The dryer doesn't seem to help. The tailgate moulding is glued on with 4 strips from side to side and a strip on each end. Start with the floss (or fishing line) on a top corner it will not get far but just enough to get your knife in. BE Carefull you can scratch the paint easy. Once you get enough cut with the knife it is really a matter of grunt work pulling the darn thing off by hand.

Getting this piece off & the glue cleaned up is hard. Use the Goo Gone & the spredder over & over again. Let the goo stuff sit for a while before you use the spredder. I spent a couple of hours on it and the glue is still there though a lot less. Tomorrow I will get another bottle of goo & try the bug & tar remover.
A couple more hours and I hope the darn glue finally comes off.

Today I went harder core with the chemicals. It is called GOOF OFF. Strong stuff. BE Careful with it. The fumes are bad & it can irratate your skin and ir is bad for plastic. Use WHITE rags or towels. Pour some Goof on the rag and rub it into the glue in the direction of the glue. With another dry WHITE rag rub the glue again in the same direction. The glue willstart to come off in sticking globs.

Every once in a while use some soapy water to get that darn stuff your paint. And start with the rags again. A little time & patience (it took me two hours) and the glue is gone. Your tailgate is now clean.

one thing that would work great to take off the adhesive is an eraser pad I work at a custom car shop and thats what we use to take the badges and trim off, it's alot easier then trying to do all that stuff

I was wondering something and this thread might be the place, but that Gasket Remover I got from Advance, made from Permalex, worked REALLY good. It foams up the RTV sealant. Now, I wonder, would that also break up everyday adhered stuff?

Yes, looks a whole lot better. I think you should get some GTS smoked tail covers, would look pretty neat with the red.

All the Plastic came off in one piece and can be reused. I did not know about the eraser pad. The stuff from the auto part store worked fine for everything BUT the tailgate glue. I got GOOF OFF at Home Depot. IT did the job.

Custom Taillights are on the list of things to do.

Thanks guys

Jeff
