Perhaps the plug came off of the back of the outlet?

Fuse blew. Check the fuses.

Fuses are the very first place to check. Usually thoseplugs dont go bad easily unless they've seen alot of wear/tear. However, it's really easy to overload/blow a fuse in them.

The fuse for the ciglighter outlet is in the fuse panel on the driver side. The 12-volt outlet fuse is in the fuse box under the hood on the drivers side.

I think its in the PDC (Power Distribution Center) under the hood. Driver's side, between the battery and the cab. Big black box.

Otherwise, it will be in that little side panel on the left side of the dash by the door.

Had the same problem with my 97 and it was the fuse under the dash. I looked at my inside fuse box and was baffled too. It wasn't till later when I was installing a hotwire for my inverter that I noticed the label on the fuse box...grr
