Accel Coil !!!
#11
Their quality has really dropped the past few years. I've heard bad things about the coils, but in the process of building my Camaro motor, I decided to give the accel cap and rotor a go. Worked fine for initial start up, then after about 50 miles it developed a faint miss. Put an MSD cap and rotor on it and she never ran better.
Their plug wires still look decent, however.

Well I just got home from the lovely 160 mile total round trip drive to work today (because obviously I wasn't going to throw the timing belt at the VW last nite),and she didn't miss a beat(with the 147,000 miles old coil). No matter what the opinion is on these, obviously you can get a defective part from any company every so often. But I have to agree that Accel is not what they used to be.
On a side note, it looks like the stuff I have done to the truck, at least it gets better MPG. I filled it up when I left this morning with the intention to check the mileage, well, I pulled into the gas station and the trip was exactly 150.1 miles, I put 10.002 gallons in her. So 15 mpg is way better than the 10 is used to get. And I was going an average of 75 mph both ways with a litle stop and go on the way home.

years ago at the Rockingham NC dragstrip Mopar Day
we measured several different types of
Magnum 5.2/5.9 ignition coils
from both Accel and MSD versus the two stock factory types
for technical specs
but could find no performance improvements
i can post a long list of technical measurements
bottom line back then:
almost no gain or losses from changing ignition coils
I now have better tools:
a KAL made KM2969 ignition analyzer meter
that can measure
'burn time' in milliseconds
and 'peak Kilovolts'
and I have an Oztrip meter
that can measure
gallons per hour of fuel consumption at idle or other steady rpm
but time and money might be better spent
analyzing spark plugs and their gaps and their indexing positions
or
testing a Pertronix 'Second Strike' system
rather than
testing ignition coils
