I didn't say you were an idiot, I said the guy at the shop you took the truck to is. He is one of those "I've heard horror stories about re-treads so I don't trust them" types.
The reason I said not to mention that they're re-treads is because the shop I went to couldn't tell that mine weren't new tires.

I have run retreads before. they were like a snow tire. I was told that they didn't like using Michelin casings because the tread doesn't "stick" to there rubber compound very well. My dad has driven semi all his life, and also had heard of this being mentioned in the big truck world. I don't know if this makes a difference or not. But the guy my dad was leased to always set his re treads against the barn for a few weeks before using them. As many miles as that guy has driven in his life and never had a casing come apart I don't know if that had something to do with it or not. Ether case i don't drive my truck very far or hard so spending a few bucks on retreads in stead of new tires in general (witch all seem to be high priced these days) would probably work for me. As for the family wagon (durango) I wouldn't run them on that.

do they have different side wall options? i read all 25 pages and only see BFG. Ive have BFGs before and every time they dry rot before any signifigant wear, different sizes, on my truck my moms van and my dads jeeps they all cracked before about 30,000 miles on em. the ones on my truck rotted before i even had 10,000. took em back and got some Korean Michelin knock offs. so far ive gone over 60,000 miles on em so im thinking these would be a good idea.

It took me awhile to find it. http://www.treadwright.com/t-news003.aspx
11th paragraph down.
I guess it was just a comment in one of the articles. It may be different now. If it was against the law now I would think that they would say so when ordering tires.
