Unhappy cranking fine, no start

so here is the problem i went out to start my truck this morning and for the first time it wouldn't start, it cranks fine, i smelled fuel to begin with. i even hooked it up jumper cables to another truck to make sure it was getting plenty of voltage/amperage. i checked and it does have spark (MSD coil and ignition box) it will sputter once in awhile. i did fill it up that day. i just can't figure it out? PLEASE HELP!

If it has plenty of crank then it should not be a starter fuse.

Maybe the fuel pump went out? Have a friend/wife/kid/smart dog turn the key to the "start" position without cranking the motor and you get under the fuel tank and listen for the fuel pump to kick on. If you dont hear anything then have them crank the motor while you beat on the tank if she fires up its a fuel pump. Oddly enough fuel pumps will and wont work even when there bad. Use a rubber mallet if you got on or a pices of wood, dont use anythign that could casue damage to the tank.

Best of luck, report back.

Fuel pump will run with the key in the on position, don't have to be in start position.

Check the fuel pressure with a gauge and if you still have the old coil, try it.

It takes spark, fuel and AIR for the engine to run. If you have spark and smell fuel then you are missing air. Check the air intake system, you could have a critter that decided to find a warm hideout or a clogged air filter. You stated that you smelled gas "to begin with". You should not have smelled gas unless there is a fuel leak or the engine is flooded. If it's flooded it could be a TPS problem supplying too much fuel, but you would continue smelling fuel. If you are not smelling fuel any longer it could be the TPS supplying too little fuel, or the fuel pump is failing as others have written. How did you determine you had spark? Sputtering could be an indication of an intermittent electrical problem in ignition circuit also. It is going to be trial and error but check one system at a time to pin it down.

turn the truck to the on position.... Hold down gas pedal to floor for bout 5 seconds maybe a lil long. give the truck about 10 seconds and start it... My guess is you got bad gas...

i went back out and i can hear the fuel pump running, i didn't have a spark checker so i just took the coil wire off and it was jumping to the ground on the coil 2-3in. whenever i would let it stop cranking it would throw a little black smoke out of the exhaust. is there a chance that the gas is full of water? or something else wrong with the gas?

thanks again for the help!
