It's up to you. If ya like Royal Purple then go for it. I put Valvoline in my truck. Filter can be had at a local parts store. Make sure when you check the fluid level that your truck is in Neutral and not in Park. I 'm positive I put 7qts all together in my truck when I changed the tranny fluid.

I'd stick with the Valvoline or Mopar ATF+4.
All ATF+4 is fully synthetic. (Need I repeat -ALL ATF+4 is FULLY SYNTHETIC)

Center for Quality Assurance is what Chrysler LLC uses for the licensing of ATF+4.

When licensed, Chrysler-approved ATF+4 is produed under strict guidelines, why pay more for something that is not specifically made for Chrysler transmissions?

I had a guy bring in a 96 dodge ram diesel. Said it lost second gear and he wanted a rebuild. The truck had 210k on it and he and his son had owned it since new.

When i tore down that 47re, it was SO clean, almost spotless. The ONLY thing wrong with that unit was the band slowly went out of adjustment and burnt from the slipping. I rebuilt it and he put it back in the truck. I commented to him about how clean the transmission was, I asked him if it had been overhauled recently.

He told me that the transmission had never been touched and that he was an amsoil dealer and thats all he used. Just regular fluid and filter changes and amsoil.

I was impressed.

That's good that you said that. I actually tried to get the trans shop who rebuilt mine to put amsoil in my trans, but no one local has it. They wanted to put atf +3 in with a friction modifier and I told they they were going to put ATF +4 no questions about it. Ended up putting in penzoil atf 4 full synthetic in because thats what was available.

Ok, I got another ? You guys say that you use 6-7 quarts at a change. The Dodge service manual and my Haynes manual state to use only 4 quarts at a service fill.

All I am doing is dropping the pan, dumping the pan fluid, changing the filter, adjusting the bands and adding a external filter(adds maybe 1/2 quart). So, how much do I need? This is really confusing me!

Start with 4 quarts and add as necessary.

Mine took about 6.5 qts to do just a pan drop light service. It depends on how long you let it sit and drip. I would say get 7 qts to be safe.

Overfilling the transmission can result in blown seals. NOT a good thing to do.
