i think just get underneath, grab the sucker with a nice size pair of channel locks, and give her a twist, the worst its going to do is just rip the metal off the whole thing in which case you an do like apa228 siad with the holes in the top. and this is caused by the overtightening of the filter on installation, like everyone said, just hand snug, the pressure of the motors oils sytem it will keep it in place and eventually "tighten"...

let us know when it comes off

The problem with channel locks is that the jaws don't typically extend far enough to get around the filter. I would get these:

or one of these:

I know you prolly are, but just so it can be said, make sure you are screwing it the correct way. There are plenty of times where people can mistake the way to turn it because its upside down.

DONE. finally i got it off. i had to rip open the filter and just hit it with a blunt chisel and hammer and screw it off. i tried the channel lock pliers and didnt work ( it did help me break the filter apart.) thanks for all those great tips. ill remember them if for some weird reason this ever happens again, which i think it won't. \m/

I want to finish this nasty oil change already. by the way the oil filter's brand is FRAM

This is a 12 year old thread..........

What are you driving, and what tools do you have available? I have driven a screwdriver thru filters before, and then used that to lever them loose..... But, that only works if you have the room.

Harbor Freight sells a locking oil filter wrench that makes removing a stuck filter pretty easy: https://www.harborfreight.com/lockin...nch-63696.html

In the past I've driven a screwdriver through the oil filter, but that didn't end well for me.
