In the past I've driven a screwdriver through the oil filter, but that didn't end well for me.

That, and when I turned the screwdriver to loosen the oil filter, it just shredded the steel the filter was made from and didn't loosen the filter, so I had half an oil filter stuck on the engine.

Gotta drive it in near the mounting plate. Learned that one the hard way too. (but, low enough that you don't run the screwdriver into the threaded pipe it mounts to.)
