Default Stuck Oil Filter

I was changing my truck's oil today but when i came to get the old filter off, its stuck. I tried to take it off with the tool that looks like a loop with a handle and it crushed the filter. I also tried the screw driver trick and that did not help . now the filter has a big hole in the middle. Some one told me that the gasket got stuck on to the engine, but how can i get it off? i also tried it with a knife and no luck. Any idea how I can get that thing to unscrew. I want to finish this nasty oil change already. by the way the oil filter's brand is FRAM

Your gonna have to get "innovative" here.
Sounds like someone either overtightned the filter when they put it on (FYI, when you tighten it the new one down, follow the instructions on the box, its not supposed to go as tight as you can get it!) or maybe didn't lube the gasket (although, I believe that would just cause the gasket to stick to the engine).

yes i think thats the case. so with those pliers , do i have to get the filter from the top and twist with all my might? and does the WD40 penetrate to the screw because i think the gasket IS glued to the engine.

You'll probably want to grip the filter as close to the top (where it threads into the block) as possible.

AFAIK you are only supposed to HAND TIGHTEN the filter, it should also be able to come off with out having to use any tools, though I have only one come off that easy.

I would advise not to use wd40. You are not going to penetrate the gasket. You are just going to make the filter slippery and you don't want that. A good pair of channel locks or even better the channel locks designed for oil filters would be my choice. My next choice would be a strap wrench.

By the screwdriver trick I assume you mean driving one completely through the old filter and trying to turn it off. If that has failed as you say and the other suggestions do not take it off, rio the casing apart with a good set of pliers. The bottom flange of the oil filter is a much heavier gauge of metal than the casing. When you get to the base you will see a series of holes going in a circular pattern. Use the screwdriver and a hammer to tap the filter loose. Put the tip of the blade in a slot and hit it as close to parallel with the face of the filter base. Be aware that this is a messy solution and is really a last resort measure.

Oh man, I've been there before. Bought a Blazer not too long ago with an oil filter as tight as you speak of. The screwdriver trick didn't work, but the modified screwdriver trick did. Okay, I made that last part up, but when using the screwdriver, make sure its all the way through the filter and poking out the other end. Use the largest diameter screwdriver you have. You want a big FLAT surface to keep the oil filter shell from ripping when you apply force. Don't use a skinny screwdriver. Think flat, like a file. Then make a second hole, perpendicular to the first hole, so that you have two huge screwdrivers or similiar tools providing 4 contact areas on the oil filter shell. Should look like an "X". Use smooth constant torque and remember its going to move real slow for the first 1/4 turn or so. Good luck.
