Default 46re Overdrive

Hey guys, had a question in regards to the overdrive on the 46re transmission. Is it just me, or does it seem like these Rams work harder than usual to get into overdrive? Finally once it gets into overdrive, you really have to be chugging right along, otherwise it will kick back down into third gear. It's why I hate getting stuck behind people. They'll be going just at the speed where I'm 2mph away from getting into o/d, and then when I finally do, they'll slow down and it will kick back down. I've driven a lot of different trucks, and it seems like the overdrive doesn't play that big of a role that it does in my truck, hardly notice it. Are these transmissions just overbuilt, or?

Nope, its just your truck...

Mine does nothing like that, pops into overdrive unnoticed, when on highway rarely ever does it even kick its self out of od to pass...

Something must be wrong.

It could be that your throttle position sensor is flaking out. Another possibility could be the adjustment of the throttle valve cable for the transmission-- but I'm not sure if that has any effect on overdrive or not (since OD is electronically controlled).

I'm not saying it's a bad thing....the transmission shifts nicely. I've driven others dodge rams and it had a similar feeling, just felt like it works a lot to get into overdrive, and kicks out the minute it hits a hill, like it loses power badly on hills. I drive my father's f-150 and it won't loose power going up a hill.

It is not just you. I always blamed my poor power on hills to be my gears (3.55). My old buddys truck had 4.10's and 32's stock and I don't remember his truck kicking in and out like mine does. But since your running 4.10's and 33's I don't see why it would make a big difference. I kick in and out on hills all the time to answer your question though.

The only time mine likes to hop around like that is right around 45mph. Thats just because the transmission isnt geared perfectly for the torque range of the engine and is in between gears at that speed, IMO. At highway speeds I can pull hills and pass in OD without any problems. 3.92's and 285's

i think mine shifts into OD too soon. w/ OD on, it will shift at about 40-45 mph and then bog down. i get much better results to leave OD off, and then turn it on only when i'm going 55-60 or so.

Geez, you have tall gearing.

Since you have the 5.2 and tall tires, Your truck will really come alive with 4.10 gears.

yeah, i'm just too cheap to spend the money. w/o doing a whole lot of math, i'd guess that my stock tires 225/75/16 w/ 3.55 are about equivalent to the 285/75 w/4.10
