Engine oil
Just FYI trucklover, 5W30 and 10W30 are the same weight...just different viscosities. You see a lot of people who think they are putting a heavier weight oil in their vehicles with the 10W instead of the 5W. It really isn't "heavier" it just gets thinner quicker when heated. You would have to go up to a 40 weight to actually get heavier oil. I have used the Valvoline Full Synth 10W30, the Valvoline Semi Synth 10W30, the Mobil 1 Full Synth 10W30, the Mobil 1 Extended Life 10W30, and the Mobil 1 Clean 5000 10W30. I think the Clean 5000 is the way to go if you want to stick with conventional. Filters, I would say Purolater, Mobil 1, K&N, Wix, Napa Gold (Wix)...just no Frams. I think the oil filter is more important than the oil anyway...just my .02
If I was racing my truck and wanted every ounce of HP, I would dish out the $$$ for the $8/qt stuff, but that isn't the case. I like servicing my truck, so I don't really like only getting to change my oil once or twice a year.

Ive used Mobile 1 Full Synth 10w-40 , Royal Purple 10w-40 and Penzoil Platnium Full Synth 10w-30. So far the best i love is royal purple. Engine just seems to run so much smoother. Ive since switched all fluids cept for trans to Royal purple. I change my oil every 1500 miles religously, including filter. I happen to use the K&N hp-2004 cause i like having the nut option. Im looking at getting a Remote Oil Filter Mount and Oil cooler , Any recomendtations?

The main reason for this thread is I am trying to track down a tapping/rattle noise in my engine. I was thinking maybe I am running too thin on the oil, and have a little leak down. But after reading all this I don't think that is the issue. The noise only occurs from 1800-2500 rpm, only when there is no load on the engine, and the tapping/rattle noise is a fast tapping sound with no rythem to it. It's not a knock sound, but it sounds like a valve rattle (it's not spark knock because it doesn't occur under load, and I run 93 octane fuel in it) It also doesn't occur until the engine is warmed up. I dropped the oil pan the other day and there was no metal shavings in the pan. I checked the bearings by trying to move the connecting rods 90 degrees of the crank and there was no movement. I know now that you should check them with plastic gauge, but I didn't do that. But, like I said the sound I am hearing is a fast tapping sound not like a rod knock anyway.
I have run 10W30, which is the recommended, since I got my truck, and it's always been there. I thought about going with 10W40 to see if anything changes, but I still think it's an exhaust leak somewhere. PM me if you discover something different.
