Default cold air intake vs. Top hat style

I was wondering if there was any big difference in the two performance wise and also fuel economy wise. I'm looking at doing that this summer or whenever I get the money to and was wanting some input.

If im correct , and thats a 50/50 chance , hehe. The cold air intake will allow you to get colder air tempeatures from outside the engine bay away from the heat. This colder air will result in more air flow into your engine. The top hat style , im assuiming you mean a carb style air filter housing. I have the elderbrock Tri Foam airfilter meant for carbs sitting on my 5.2. I love it more so then the k&n cold air system i had, just for the neatness it offers, but performance wise i didnt notice a big difference between the two. As for gas milage, Yea.... my gas gauge is broke and i just fill up every 100miles so i cant help you there.

to figure your gas mileage fill up your truck then drive it for 100 or so miles then fill up again and divid the miles driven by the amount you put in

never tried the top hat style, but i swapped the stock system that had a drop in K&N filter, with the full AEM Brute Force system, and felt no difference..

Cold air does not result in more air flow. It results in a denser air charge (more oxygen in the air charge).

Search for threads using words like, "round filter", "Mopar filter", and "K&N FIPK No More". There is a ton of information and comparisons between CAI's and round filters.

I was wondering how long some one would take to catch it....

when i added a cold air intake on my 99 chevy i can tell and feel the difference (mass air flow sensor) on these dodges are speed dense sensor , so you really wouldnt gain nothing adding a CAI , thats why these guys like using the open round air filter , like i did , Rember the bigger the filter more you gain top end , 3" height should be your max , matter of fact 2" to 2 1/2" or 2 3/4" (2.75) is the idea...

Yup, there are several reasons why CAI's really aren't all that great on our engines, and why round filters seem to be better. These include the fact that we don't have mass air flow sensors, the location of the IAT, and the design of the intake manifold.
