YES MY YOUNG JEDI THEY ARE STILL CALLED BEARINGS because they aid the crank to "float" using the cushioning of the oil and it's thermal reducing capabilities to protect it from friction.
Think about the oil as a molecule and it becomes a great ball bearing ....

NOw don't ask me what's the meaning of life? because I'm not going to tell you hahaha

I would strongly advise against doing that. First, red chassis grease does not belong inside an engine. If you want to grease something in the engine, use assembly lube only (Lubriplate 105 for example). Second, you never apply oil or grease to the backside of a new bearing shell unless you want it to fail.

well now that i am a day late on this thread. i am going through this very problem but i through alot more money at it cause mine was bad, i bough a whole new crank with matched bearings. i pulled the motor and all to do it.

one question i have for you, one BIG way to tell right off the bad if it is a bearing problem. what is your oil pressure like? does it crazy drop at any time?

as to speak on the chassis grease. i do strongly advise to now do that. think about it, it has chassis in the name. not motor grease. lucas sells a bottle of assembly lube that is a very good investment. along with an oil break in adative. < not needed but good to use with new bearings.

and so you know, when i pulled my motor to check the connecting rods. they ALL were plastigaged at .005+, thats how bad they were and yet my mains were still at a close .02-.003. so i dought your mains have anything to do with it.

but check your oil pressure before anything else is done. it will be a dead giveaway.

my oil pressure has always been 30 at idle 45 while at speed, it never changes..

that's a weird thought
