For a reputable 4.10 ring and pinion set from randy's ring and pinion, they go for about $295. So it's about $600 for both differentials. Now if you don't know how to install the gearing yourself, some shops can charge anywhere from $300-500 for installation per axle. So yes, it is expensive. I was lucky and knew a mechanic that was willing to come to my house and help me out for mega cheap, and did a carrier swap for only $80. But split it up if you don't know someone, buy the gears, then save up for the install. So yes having both differentials upgraded is about the price of an SCT tuner, you have to pick what you want. If you aren't running oversized tires, then I'd put my money into a SCT. But if I had oversized tires, I'd want to make sure my gearing was correct before I was trying to push any performance out of my drivetrain.

If you have 285/75's, you have more like a 33" tire instead of a 31" tire. With 33's, you would be happier with 4.10's than 3.55's for sure. It comes down to what you would rather do first. The 4.10's would ease the drag on you tranny and rear end, but it won't give you as much of a power gain as getting the SCT.
Yes, $600 for both differentials for just the parts. Installation prices will vary as stated before. I think an SCT is great, but I just feel like it's limited. You buy an SCT, then your going to feel obligated to use it, which to me, is abuse in the longrun. I learned awhile ago that these dodge ram trucks are not meant to be raced. Honeslty, I haven't even laid into my truck once since the new transmission. Going nice and steady and just appreciating a fine running and looking machine gives me the most happiness.
If you install 4.10 gearing, however, it's an overall smart investment, and doesn't pertain exclusively to performance. It's easing wear and tear on your drivetrain, and the truck is going to be immediatly peppier the instant you put your foot on the gas pedal. What good is an SCT tuner if your gearing is out. Mashing on the pedal undergeared is not a smart idea. Gearing appeals to me mostly because it's a great upgrade for the truck itself in regards to towing and everyday driving, not just making it go faster. Again, I think an SCT is great, but not until the drivetrain is at least upgraded accordingly.
