i used the expensive felpro rubber/metal gasket with no sealer. no leaks. just clean both surfaces.

Did you use the new bolts that came with the kit , or your old ones ? Just curios.

I'm still not sure why he needs to pull the valve covers to change the plenum gasket?

I have the metal/rubber felpro gasket kit as well. I'm just doing the valve covers at the same time since they're oozing a little. I figured they're not going to be any more accessible any time in the near future.

So it seems I have a decision to make-- ultra copper vs. nothing. I bought the ultra copper so I'll just have it on hand and decide if it looks like it needs it or not when I have it apart.

Thanks for the help guys.

Yes the ultra copeer is different. I don't really think it's silicone based but I might be wrong. I just know that it worked real good for my plenum replacement.

I cracked it open, and it definitely smells different-- more of an earthy scent rather than the vinegary smell of regular RTV. It seems to almost be a bit gritty too.

how's it taste ? probably sort of sticky, like peanut butter.

Just make sure that it didn't come from that bankrupt peanut butter plant that shipped all of that salmonella contaminated stuff. The salmonella would get ya sicker than hell and the sealer would close you off.
