I tried to get him to download and look at the '01 Service Manual the other day to help him avoid embarrasment, but I was ignored as usual. He also said he couldn't find his Haynes manual and that it's not user-friendly enough for him.

Actually I have it downloaded...

I looked up the 46re transmission section and could not find a heading for towing. Should I look somewhere else?

When you do not have a load on your truck yes you put the truck in overdrive going down the highway. But when you have a load on it, as you will with a few sleds then you leave overdrive off or it will kick itself in and out of overdrive.

Thats just what I was going to say as well, its very hard on your tranny (which is now stock, keep in mind) to tow in O/D.

Trust us, we've heard enough stories about the O/D and towing on the forum here. Just do a search.

How long is the warranty on that tranny?

Dude, if I get 500 pounds in the bed of my truck, OD is OFF! yea your truck will be running any where between 3000 rpms ~ 4000 rpms. Its a little steep, and your mileage will suck, but that is a hell of a lot better than burning yet another tranny.
Just watch your temp gauge and you will be fine.
