Suggestions for differential

Default Suggestions for differential

I have a 2000 5.9 Sport 4X4 1500. I run 285 75 r16. Im pretty sure i have an open differential. I would like to beable to take my vehicle on the beach and other places and not worry about getting stuck. I was hoping to get a limited slip differential. The cheaper the better but i want a good differential. I am not opposed to using a junk yard.
do u guys have any suggestions what i should look for and where?
bad experiences or good experiences?
I havent worked on cars much but im pretty good with my hands, and would like to install the differential my self, any advice will be greatly appreciated.

I've got the same truck, only 318 motor and I got a full locker for my rear.
This is what I put in mine and have never looked back since.

I'm actually considering getting another one for the front diff since I've been venturing into deeper and deeper mud holes lately.

A detroit locker is the best of the best for the 9.25 (possibly and axel really)

As far as limited slips go

Auburn makes a good limited slip for our trucks, You could check with silver dodge about those, I think overall he's been satisfied with his. Although I think he had to replace it once.

Detroit also makes the tru-track which is a limited slip, but it uses gears instead of clutch packs so it might be a little more durable.

Lockers dont allow the wheels to spin at different speeds correct? this truck is my daily driver and my understanding is they dont drive well on the road with a locked diff. Is this true? or can you "unlock" the diff.?
Is a locker more expensive then a LSD?
Whats is more durable?
Turbo or anyone else do you have any problems driving on the road with ur locker?

A locker will unlock going around a corner, but then re-locks when going in a straight line.
It is still less street friendly than a limited slip is going to be. It's up to you to decide wether the traction benefits outweigh the steet manners.

On your truck I doubt you'd notice a locker. A lot of the "unfriendlyness" of a locker is the sudden jerk you may feel when you go through a corner. Concensus among users is that its more noticable on lighter vehicles than heavier ones. At worst you may have to adjust your turning technique a bit
On sand, I'd want to have a locker. An LSD would let go and you'd likely be one wheeling again. Limited slips are exactly that. They limit but eventually allow it.

The truck is my DD unless I'm on the bike in the summer. I've got 20k+ miles on it since I've put the locker in. Read the link below, and you'll see that I've mentioned all about it. I've even towed seadoos with it in the summer without problems. It only take a little bit of adjustment to your driving tecnique.

A spool will lock both tires together at the same speed all the time.

A detroit locker will not let either tire rotate slower than the ring - but, one wheel can spin faster (such as when going around a corner). Of course, if you have it hammered and hit the corner... you will notice a difference.

Thanks alot guys. I think i would rather have a locker after reading all this... so im deffinately going to look into that. How would i have to adjust my turning, just turn wider? What happens if i dont adjust my driving style, does it damage that locker at all?

Locker all the way. Need to save me money for new gears and rear locker. Locker is better in the mud and sand than a LSD.
