Default ATF+2 or ATF+4

Will be getting my trans flushed shortly ('97 4x4) and just wonder why everyone hear talks about using only ATF+4. The manual just calls for +2.

Your owners manual probably calls for a 7176 or ATF+3. both of those have been superseeded by ATF+4. All are synthetic and its the only thing you should use in your transmission. If your shop tells you they have "universal" or "additive" or some other bull$hit then you need to show them the owners manual and tell them to either use that (ATF+4) or nothing. if its a problem then buy it and take it to them. beware, its expensive.

dexron/mercon 3 is NOT the same thing as ATF+3 nor ATF+4

I was told to use ATF+4 no matter what. I researched a little, and this is what I came up with. I was also told to not use synthetic either because our transmissions weren't built for sythetic fluid?? Correct me if I'm wrong, somebody at work told me that.

Mopar ATF+4 is all I will use. Some guys like Amsoil though but I see no reason as the Mopar is proven to work and already a synthetic. BTW Wal-Mart sells Mopar brand transmission fluid or at least used to for a ton cheaper than the dealer and it was the same thing. It was like $4 or $5 a quart vs $11. I haven't bought any in a while.

Use the ATF+4 ONLY, and stop second-guessing yourself.

Chrysler phased out all ATF+2 and +3 years ago in favor of ATF+4

DO NOT use Type F, Dexron, Mercon III or V, or Universal ATF.

I think the ATF +4 (Wal Mart brand) is 4-5 bucks a quart. I just bought some a month or so ago when I changed the fluid in my xfer case.

Dont be afraid to use an "off brand" ATF+4. It is the same stuff as Mopar ATF+4.

Yeah, when I replaced my governor pressure sensor in my '01, I found Mopar brand ATF+4 at WalMart for like $4.69 a quart, not too bad.

I found my receipt and my Super Tech ATF+4 was 3.93/qt. Not too bad. Fortunately the quality of the ATF is higher than the sawdust and bootleather dog food they sell. :B
