Default spacer for air cleaner

I'm going to go with a 14x3 air cleaner. Do I need to get a 1/2 throttle body spacer for it or will i be okay without one? If I do need one where can i get one at?

why would you have to run a spacer with a round air cleaner? its a much better choice to go with a flat or raised base instead of a drop, use the tallest element you can fit, flo-tops work fantastic as well. i dont use a 14x3, so maybe im missing something here

Because if you buy one from Autozone lets say, they are most likely only going to have the dropped one. Without the spacer , the base hits the linkage and/or other various things.

I bought the 14"x3" Edelbrock Pro-Flo 1221. And I had to buy a spacer...bought it from autozone and 3 different sizes came in the pack.

I had to use 1" spacer with 14X3 filter with dropped base.
I think 3/4" would do but 1" spacer is all I had.
It depends on the base design.
Pack of spacers from AutoZone is $7.99 (they only come in a pack)

if this is the case, i would find a place that sells a flat base. it has been proven that you can lose around 5hp by using a drop base over a flat one. those of you who are looking for your cheap 5-10hp.... this is where you can get it.

With the flat or raised base and 3/4" to 1" spacer you might not be able to fit 3" tall filter. You might have to use one that is only 2" tall.
There is not a lot of room to fit your 14" x 3" filter setup (with dropped base). But it fits, looks and performs well.
Just my $0.02

+1 on that. You'd never get a 3 inch filter in a truck (without a body lift) with a flat base. I'm not sure when you got the horespower loss theory because I've been told for years that a drop base tends to create a velocity stack effect at certain rpms. I remember the Moroso rep discussing it at a tech seminar. In fact they showed dyno charts that showed how much inprovement could be gained over a flat base aircleaner. Now I know this is back in the day of carburetors...but we're still flowing air.

Wow! Moroso still has the pictures after almost 28 years! Check it out!
