Default *sigh* Another Tuner Thread

Ok, I know tuners have been beat to death on this site, but I have an odd ball question.
I have read practically every thread pertaining to tuners in most of the forums here. From what I gather, they 1997 year trucks were oddballs. I look on Superchips' site, and I see that they dont offer support for a 1997 Ram truck. I look on Hypertech's site and I see that they do offer a tuner for my truck.

I have made the assumption that the lack of support from superchips is due to the fact that 1997 trucks were OBD1, and the 1997.5 trucks were OBD2.

I would prefer a superchips over hypertech, but I will go hypertech if I can't do an SC.

So, here is my question: Since I have OBD2 on my truck, can I get away with using a 1998 SC model?
(I know, I am finally joining the darkside)

That's a darn good question Laramie. I have the exact same issue on my truck. I have a 97 with obd2 and just asked the same question in another thread about ten minutes ago. I have used superchips tuners on all the trucks I have owned and don't want to change now. I will be watching this thread closely for the answer.

I have looked into SCT, but I don't plan on getting real crazy with mods on it. I bring this up because I got home from being in that truck all day driving 600 miles to make a drop. Usually, I am on decent sized hills, but today, I got into some pretty steep ones traveling at 80, and got tired of feeling OD kick in and out.

1995 was technically the last year for it, but 1996 through 1997 models (but not necessarily 1997.5 models) were what I'd call "oddball" years. It was a hybrid half-a**ed OBD II system that was pretty unique, if I correctly understand what I've read.

As far as if you could get away with it, the easiest way would be to ask this guy. His user name is Superchips Tom, and he was extremely helpful when I had problems with my Flashpaq.

Oh yeah, you were the one to bring him up to me, weren't you? Ha! Well, glad I could maybe (cross your fingers) return the favor.

Just got this from Tom:

I'm out of the office this week, so I don't have access to our internal files that would point me to the right product for your Ram. I suspect you'd require a Max MicroTuner for that vehicle vintage. We only go back about 7-10 years on most trucks. Even if we had coverage in the past, I'm pretty sure our current products don't go back that far. If a MMT tuned it back then, we still have that product in our warehouse or at a local distributor.

I'll have Scott PM you with more details regarding the right product(s) for your vehicle.

I'll try to follow up with you when I return to the office late next week.

Stay tuned.

Tom Bennett
Superchips, Inc.

So hopefully good news is on the way.
