Yeah. Advance Auto Parts sells packs of assorted plastic spacers for just a few bucks. I bought it and tried out a few till I got the fit right. You only need a spacer if you use a drop filter like I did. If you use a flat bottomed air cleaner, you shouldn't need a spacer, but then again, you will have to get a slimmer filter to fit under the cowl.

The round filter flows more air by virtue of its open design compared to the restrictive stock housing. more air=better throttle response and performance. As for sound, the stock airbox muffles the intake sound, that whoosh of air being sucked into the TB. The open air cleaner lets you hear it...and enjoy it.

Understand that, like may things on these trucks, the stock airbox is a design of compromise. If it weren't for the EPA regulations on evaporative emissions we would still be running open air cleaners like cars from the
'60s did from the factory. The engineers do their best to make them work as efficiently as possible, but they are handcuffed by the regulations and can only achieve so much. That's why the aftermarket exists and why so many of these products are available, but forced to have the dreaded "For off-road use only" tag applied to them.
Unfortunately, these open air filter elements are totally illegal in Cali and if not for the fact that I have to pass smog inspection every 2 years, I would have considered one. Instead, I put on a K&N CAI that meets CARB approval and passes the visual inspection.
