Default gears i think of

well i am between a set of gears... i hve differant people tellin me differant things.

i am going to be putting my 7 to 9 inchs of lift on my truck... rebuilt transfer case, new trans w/cooler, and a set of 37 or 38 inch tires. i am putting dana 60s (already with 4.10 gears) front and rear under the truck...

i have been told to put at least 5.13 gears because of the tires size. i then talk to my dad and he tells me that that is to low,

as for the engine, i plan on doing a built exhaust, aFe intake (stage 2), hypertech tuner, and MSD coil w/ wires and good plugs....

i dont know what gears would be m best bet being that this truck will be on the road as much as off road, and when its on the road, its not for racing so i am on the highway more then the bckstreets. so i dont know. im stuck in a sence

i would go with 5.13s

60mph in O/D (0.69:1)

4.10 = 1501 RPM
4.88 = 1787 RPM
5.13 = 1878 RPM

I think the extra rpm is ok for the amount of torque you will be getting, dont forget that a 38" tire is going to weigh over 200lbs, thats alot of tire to get rolling from a stop.

Also, 4.10 is the cutoff for carriers size in D60s, if you want to go any lower (numerically higher) you will need to buy a carrier for that style.

Dana 60s dont have a 3rd member, those came in Ford 9" and chrysler 8 3/4" style. the carrier is the center section that holds the bearings, spiders, sides and ring gear. If you are buying a detroit locker, it will replace the whole thing anyway, just make sure you specify you need it for whaterver gears you decide to choose.

ok, for the rear, i knda unerstand, i am coming froma learning point here, so if i dont get teh detroit locker, becasue i need to make sure the truck goes in every gear (foward and reverse) first being i cant go backwards right now, i get a set of 5.13 gears, for a dana 60, what else do i need to replace? you said a carrier, what part is that, like i am still kinda not all there with axle just yet...

WOW! So even with 5.13's, someone with 38's will still be turning a slightly slower RPM then my truck with 33's and 3.55! Dang!!! And here I want 4.56's and also want to keep my 33's.

I have 35's and 4.56, and I can tell you that any bigger then 35 and I would definetly want 4.88. I think 5.13's are a good choice for what you want to run. Don't go any lower (numerically) then 4.88 for sure.

+1 on Silver

Do not put a limited slip in with those big meats. You'll need either a cable locker or just a full detroit. Stay away from pneumatic lockers. (the locker is your carrier). Might want to look into 35 spline axles, they'll fit. Or upgrade your 30's to a chrome-moly axle. 38's are HUGE and take alot of upgrades to stock parts if you want to wheel it. Spend the money now instead of on a tow truck later.
