transmission cooling upgrade, need suggestions
I am looking to see what some other guys have done, or problems they have over come.
I am looking at ordering a chrysler deep transmission oil pan with the extra hole for temperature sensor, getting a mechanical full sweep autometer transmission gauge. This will allow me to add 2 more quarts, keep an eye on my transmission.
However, i am still looking to add a second transmission cooler, one from B&M, either their 10 or 13" wide super coolers.
My question is, what is the best way to tie the new system in. I have seen guys just cut the rubber hoses add a double barbed coupler and connect it to the new transmission cooler. How much pressure is in those hoses? can a double barbed coupler & a hose clamp keep the pressure under control?
What size of threads are on the 46RE(A-518) if i wanted to get 1/2" steel braided tubing and bypass the rad and go straight into the B&M transmission cooler? or is it best not to screw with the threads on the side of the transmission?
just want to get an idea of what others have done. I am doing this because i am almost done with the 408 upgrade and i dont want to cook the transmission heh.

A barbed fitting and clamps will hold just fine, they are pretty much the industry standard for installing coolers in transmission shops.
Although a steel braided line would look MUCH better. I dont know the size of the threads, i would guess to say they are just NPT, but ive never taken the time to measure the threads.

there's not much pressure. all you need is rubber transmission hose and clamps. you don't even need barbed fittings. just cut the end of the original tubing and clamp on the hose. remove the check valve. you can double clamp it if it makes you feel better.

word of caution on oversize pans - the same pan SHAPE fits the 727, 518, 46rh, 46re, etc. the 46re is already extra deep to accomodate the solenoids. you can measure it, but its several inches deep. the stock 727 is shallow. so - pans advertised as 727 extra deep may be the same or more shallow that stock 46re. so beware. also beware the magtec 727D and 727DD are two different things. and summit has one that won't even fit a 46re.

A friend of mine showed me his 2006 Ram recently, and I like how the radiator is on one side of the front end and the A/C condenser is on the other.
I would like to install the cooler in a different location that will still be effective.

I want to install a transmission cooler as well, but don't like how the A/C condenser is stacked in front of the radiator and then the trans cooler is stacked atop that. Not a slight against you, it's how 99% of the installs are done.

BTW didn't any of your trucks come with a tranny cooler? Mine has a tranny cooler factory installed between the condenser and the radiator. First the lines go into the radiator, then out to the cooler, then back to the tranny. I would think that would be good enough.
