the end of one of the grease caps of the u-joint is tapped with an odd thread.

because of the low clearance, you can't put a permanent zerk in it. i tried to use a temporary zerk, to install only for greasing, but i tried every zerk i could find, and none had the proper threads.

this little grease adapter did have the right threads. i put it on only to grease those front u-joints, and then remove it and store it. unless you spend a lot of time cleaning it, it remains full of grease.

yes, the black rubber plugs just cover the threads, and keeps it clean.

another post regarding the adapter is pasted below.
i found that if you permanently screw in a zerk to the adapter, its less of a pain to use this.

i also recommend the Precision brand Super Strength greaseable. The front axle is part #377 and the drives shafts front and rear are i think #270. Rockauto website and Advance and Oreilly will all point you to the right numbers.

however - note that the Super Strength has a grease port in the cap, not in the cross - and there is NO ZERK in the cap, only a plug... so you must purchase a grease adapter, and a ZERK with a 3/8 NPT thread to make your own grease adapter.

you remove the plug (don't lose it). screw in your adapter. grease it. remove the adapter. reinstall the plug. its a little bit of a pain, but when you see the mass of the cross you say - good god what a u-joint.

adapter part number, from Advance or any parts store for a couple bucks: MTN2500-SOA (2500 is numeric, SOA is alphabetic)

I just screwed it onto an old, small grease gun that I had. I used that crimson grease because it's supposed to be more tacky and less prone to leaking out since it's a little thicker than normal grease.

I got it all back together and when I was tightening one of the hub bolts I pushed on the tie rod end with the handle of the ratchet and noticed that I need to replace some suspension components. I also noticed a bit of a coolant leak.

So sometime in the near future I need tie rods, I need to fix a leak, I need to get a wiring harness for my headlights and I need to try to adjust one of the headlights so the beam won't be star-gazing any more.

This truck sure does like attention.
