What's wrong with this picture?
Sorry, but there is a difference between replacing something the right way and with the right parts (especially when it's just as easy or easier to get the right ones), as opposed to jury rigging it and create another potential situation, JMHO, so whatever. Good luck.
Cotter pins aren't exactly jury rigging, everyone has a dozen or so on their vehicles.
I bought my truck in 2002, it has had a cotter pin in the gear shift linkage at least since then, it is still there, and I have no problems with the gear shift.
I presume that, some time before I got the truck, the factory setup had failed, and someone just stuck a cotter in it, and there it still sits.
Almost any part which lasts 7 years is a success in my book.
I don't feel compelled to run out and buy the correct factory clip/bushing or whatever it is - Consequently, I wouldn't advise that anyone else do that either, though if they want to, more power to em.
