I had a 79 Camaro V8 and the Cat & Exhaust all went bad so I took it all off and it sounded like crap with no pipes at all. What I did was take a universal cat and a bent pipe (facing down) and it sounded nice and mean after that. Since I did it myself and had no pipes (stuff was harder to get back then) it all ended right below the car at the back seat. I think you need at least a little back flow to get a nice even sound.

I had a cherrybomb extreme on my 3.1 liter monte carlo, it was ok. Its a 12 inch muffler and only had one chamber. The closest you can get to straight piped without being illegal.

i would embed it but no one has told me if you can from flickr yet.

if you're gonna do what i did you want to get a 12" sawzall blade or a big band saw because the baffles are stuck to the inside of the muffler case pretty good.

I would go with a thrush muffler. They're like $25 or so. I would also say a Magnaflow. I had one of those on my Pathfinder 3.3L V6 and it sounded pretty nice as well as on my 3.8L Firebird. Flowmasters are ok. Glasspacks aren't bad and will basically turn into a straight pipe once the fiberglass breaks in. Until then, it's gonna sound like a quiet turd.

On a V8 you pretty much got all the options you need since the engines sound nice as it is. I got a dual inlet cat then 3" piping off the cat into a glasspack exiting on the side and it sounds ballsy.

Straight pipes sound like *** on almost every engine, including V8s.
There are plenty of loud mufflers out there that sound better than straight pipes.

I'm negative because it sounds bad, it's all noise and no tone. It's not impressive at all, anyone can make a loud exhaust, making it sound GOOD is another story. A few years ago I thought straight pipes where cool too, then my ears developed more and I said to myself, "this is just noise, what's so special about it?". I'm not trying to sound condescending, that's just how I feel.

Another video to back up my belief...
