Default 97 1500 open circuit #5

Have a 97 with a strange problem. Starting a couple of months ago codes showed misfire on #5 and #8, rough running, white smoke out the pipe, strong smell of gas coming from pipe. Had all injectors and rail cleaned and tested. That fixed the problem until 2 weeks ago when same problem started again. Replaced #5 injector, still had problem. Took it to Dodge dealer to have them read system, came back with open circuit on #5. Replaced ecm and still have the problem. Can anyone help out with what to do, running out of money replacing parts.

It was actually the Powertrain Control Module that was replaced that the dealer said to replace. The parts store scanned it yesterday and it said Open circuit on cylinder 5. Don't know the actual code #.

Thanks

generally open curcuit code means bad injector. the injector is basicly stuck open dumping fuel into the cylender. when that happens, not only is it good to replace the injector, but also good to replace the spark plug and will need a fresh oil change because there is alot if fuel that gets past the rings causing the oil to thin out also causeing runability problems

I'm gonna take a wild guess here but the miss fire in #5 & #8 makes me think of the wiring TSB. Do a search and you can get instructions on how to rewire you spark plug wires to avoid this problem. If that doesn't solve it, then you didn't loose anything.

Parts store shows P0205. I replaced injector #5 before I took it to the Dodge dealer.

Thanks for the replys.

I'd at least check the spark plug at cylinder 5 and replace if it looks less than decent, as others suggested.

Have you tried rerouting the spark plug wiring then clearing the codes to see if it comes back?
