Default Miles before V10 rebuild

I tried to search for this information in a number of different ways, but when you can't use V10 in your search it makes it tough, so I thought I'd just ask...

I want to buy a 98 to 2002, Ram 2500, quad cab, long box, with a V10. But I don't know how many miles to expect out of the V10 before it will need to be rebuilt. Most of them I'm seeing have between 100K and 175K miles. Can anyone give me an idea of when you need head work or rings, bearings?

Thanks...

No different than a V8. If it has been abused, sooner, if well taken care of, later. The issue is that most V10s are used for towing, so you will need to find out how hard the truck has been used and how much towing was done with it. My V10 has 104k with excellent care and very little towing. It runs like the day it left the factory. I've seen some that were used to tow 5th wheels or large toy haulers that looked toasted at under 100k. Any truck you are interested in should be checked out by a mechanic first and if I were you I'd limit the years to '99-up.

Ha! I'd forgotten about this thread. I found a 2001 in great shape with only 46,000 miles. Only problem was the truck was in Florida and I'm in Washington State. So I had the owner take the truck to a local dealership and have a complete pre-sale inspection performed, including compression check on all 10 cylinders. Everything looked good so I paid $11,600 for it shipped. I'm REALLY enjoying the truck, and it runs like a top.

Thanks for your replies...

Ok here are a few pictures for you. The ones with time/date stamps were taken by the guy in Florida. If you're interested I'll take pictures of some white deposits that appeared on the aluminum parts of the engine after the truck was in the rainy cold Northwest for a few months. Not sure what that's about...
