Default so is this really the steering box?..

Hey I had a posta while back about the steering on my truck makin a noise when steering. I took my truck to the shop today and had an alignment done for $50. Well they said the reason for my steering being so sloppy is the steering box looks horrible. The guy showed me and he grabbed the tire and wiggled it side to side and it made a clunky noise. He said that a new aftermarket gear box would probable not help it at all. ???? How could replacing something not help it? He said it would be around $400 for a new one, that probably wouldn't do anything for it. What I don't understand is how the steering box I have on there now is a p.o.s. And replacing won't help it at all? What do you guys think?

hey sorry man, i sent that messege from my phone. i do have a sig/pic. its a 01 ram 1500.

but ive been thinking about tradig this truck in. im tired of having to replace everything. i spent about 8 grand on it int he first place. i had a ****ing run around with the dealer who wouldnt do **** until the 3k mile warrenty was up. i spent about $2300.00 on replacements that needed to be fixed. now i have another 750-800 dollar replacement ( the steering box). the steering is so sloppy. i just wasted 54$ to have it aligned, wich did nothing. the guy said my steering box is ****ed. im tired of puting money into this p.o.s truck its turning out to be. i take care of all the vehicles i drive. i dotn run them hard at all, i keep them clean, i baby them. but whoever had this truck before me didnt give a **** and drove the **** out of it. after all these headaches and empty wallets, ive been thinking about selling it or trading it in for a different truck.

if i dont decide to keep it, doese anyone klnow wehre i can get a good steering box? one that isnt 700$. ive looked on the net and i found one for like 200$ are these any good?

Well if you are not doing the work yourself and paying to have it done, I don't blame you for wanting to get rid of it.

is it sloppy all of the time or just if you hit bumps and stuff? could it be as simple as the steering damper? im told if that goes and you hit pot holes or bumps the steering feels like crap.

yes, i have payed for the parts and payed to have it worked on everytime somethign is wrong. i do not currently have the know how or the necessary tools to do this kind of work. i have a garage and a toolbox with just the usual tools. im also going to school full time right now and currently not employed so i only have so much money sitting in my bank. (wich goes into gas every other day)

also, it isnt to sloppy/clunky going straight down the road, but you can faintly noticed soething is wrong in the steering. but yes when i am going about 10-40 mph turning or going over bumps...tthere is a rattling/clunking sound and i can feel it in the wheel and on the floor and in the peddles. and the steering wheel its turned to the right about 1 inch. when i took it in earlier the guy said he wasnt able to straitin it out because of how ****ty the gear box was. so i have to hold it an inch to the left to go straight down the road; and i just paid to have it re aligned wich did absolutly nothing.

i found this...

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/00-01...mZ250498192579

now i dont know if i need the whole power steering assembly gear box or just the steerign gear box itself. because there is a difference. the whole powersteering one says 775$.

You can go to almost any parts store and get a rebuilt gear box for less than $300. And there is NO difference. I don't know what you are talking about for 775.

hey sherrif, will a 2500 power steering gear box fit on a 1500? i researched and the parts i see say they only fit the 2500's. where did u see where it said that?

and, does anyone know why replacing the gear box might only help about about 50% of the sloppy steering? thats what i dont get

A 2500 and 3500 are suppose to fit, and they are suppose to be even cheaper.
