the fuel pump would make it shut off without warning.

Not necessarily. A weak or clogged pump that reduces fuel line pressure at the injectors could cause poor perfromance and stumbling, especially above 1/4 throttle or on hard acceleration.

My 96 Ram Van 2500 had corrosion on the rails that the fuel pump slides up-n-down on, from sitting for a long time with just under 1/4 tank of gas in it.

Not a problem until the pump hung up, then all kinds of odd issues, loss of power, popping and sputtering etc etc. That was a first class b!tch to figure out.

Can I buy a fuel pump assembly at a parts store or is it a dealer only item?

Didn't you already ask that question in another thread you started? Fuel pumps can be bought from a number of places like Rock Auto or eBay. They are a b itch to replace, though, as they are mounted in the gas tank and go in from the top.

I asked that question earlier in this thread but got no responce. Thank you for responding. I'm assuming that places like CarQuest or Advance Auto Parts also sells the fuel pump assembly.

They might have to special order them, but give it a shot. One might stock it normally since these trucks are so popular.
