Yeah, the fuel pump is in the tank and cooled by the gas. It could still be a bad pump, but I doubt that it's overheating.

Do I need any special tools to unhook the fuel line from the fuel pump assembly??? I am hoping to replace it this weekend...

Thanks!

Test the pressure first, that'll tell you whether your pump is bad or not, and it doesn't require you unhook anything other than your gas cap and a relay in the PDC (Power Distribution Center).

The Haynes manual has the procedure, I'd suggest running out and getting one. Its not a end-all to manuals for our trucks, or information, but it helps quite a bit with most problems.

drop the tank. disconnect lines and wires and filler neck. unscrew the lid for the pump and slide out pump.... very easy and very straight forward procedure....mine was doing the same thing.. one way i new it was the pump.. after it did that i tapped the tank with a stick then it would start up and run fine for a bit then do it all over again.... my bet is a bad fuel pump....

I would still like to know more about his truck having a generator instead of and alternator because my 96 has an alternator? my vw has a generator and I thought they werent used in modern vehicles because of lack of efficiency and power....
