Default truck doesnt shift into overdrive

hey, so the last couple of days i have been noticing my truck has a hard time shifting from 2nd to 3rd and it doesnt want to shift into overdrive. i had to go like 40mph all the way home because i couldnt get it to shift. finally it did after messing around with the o/d button. and also it is realy sluggish on accleration. i dont know whats going on here. i thougth the exhaust was clogged, but there seems to be a pretty good amount of pressure coming out. any ideas?

atf+4 is the automatic transmission fluid recommended for our trucks and most modern autos. You should have it.

on another note, Let me ask a stupid question. Have you checked the fluid level?

It sounds like an electrical issue until you mentioned the sluggishness. Check out the throttle cable that runs from the throttle body to the transmission. You may also want to consider a fluid change and maybe a band adjustment.

One more thing, your transmission has oulived most by a long shot. I hope it isn't in its death throws, but it is possible.

i hope not. i need my truck everyday. i live 45 mins away from the college im attending that i have to drive everyday. hopefully its something minor. as for the sluggish acceleration, it might be the plenum. but i notice the engine is loud when its idling. like airy sound.

It could very well be a vacum problem to explain your lack of power. This could also be part of your shifting problem. If you're not getting any power, the truck's computer will sense that the engine is straining (as if you're climbing a hill) and the transmission wants to keep a lower gear to give you more torque. Just an idea.

Do you have a CAT or is it gutted, there is a diy up top on checking these with a IR temp gun, don't rely on just holding you're hand in front of the pipe

That could be part of the problem. A cat at operating temperature should be hotter downstream than upstream.
