Default 2001 5.9

I am looking at a 2001 1500 ext cab w/ the 5.9. My only worry is the mileage, which is 205,000. Should I be concerned or is this motor good to go?

Thanks

Motor should be good to go. My only worry would be the tranny, the trannys always seem to be the weakest part on these trucks. Take her for a good test drive and see if it slips and goes in/out of over drive smooth. Did the owner do much towing with the truck?

Unfortunately I cannot contact the owner because the vehicle was obtained by my lawyer buddy via a lien. It runs great and looks even better. I have a friend who is a mechanic who is planning to give it the once over so we will see. Just wanted some input from current/past Dodgers.

Thanks

If the price is right i say buy it. If it needs a tranny it will only cost ya about $2500 for a good rebuilt anyways.

+1 on the tranny. The magnum engines are pretty tough barring some rediculous amount of abuse, but the transmissions are sometimes iffy.

Do not lay out dollar one till you have had someone go over it. 200k plus miles is or isn't alot of miles depending on how it was treated. Given the crcumstances you described, I would try to be a thourgh as possible. A $1000 "bargain" isn't much of one if it costs $3000 to get it right.

hold on, how much are you thinking about paying for it ?

at 200k, the motor is long past its better side of life. assuming its running fine now, i'd just take a wild guess that you might get 225-250-275-300 before it going to be completely shot.

i think any truck that runs ok is usually worth at least $1000. more than that depends on condition and how much MORE your going to have to spend. the absolute last thing you need is a $2500 truck that needs another $2500 in repair. better to buy hometheater's truck.

I've seen a lot of problems on this forum for this year of ram. Especially blown head gaskets, so be ready for anything.
