There's nothing wrong with it. I just replaced my t-stat a month ago and it always goes to about 220 then drops to 200 as it warms up each morning and after work on the drive home. Also going with a 180* t-stat wont give you near as much heat in the winter months.
Then you have a problem as it should not reach 220º and then drop.
Failsafe all the way. 190*winter...180*summer......***andeveryone remember,..if you drive a 1977 Trans Am this winter...your "fail" SAFE with the 160. ha.. ha..haaa.
i drove mine to work last night with a new 195 t-stat in there and it'll come up to temp then after the stat opens, it'll stay pegged dead in the middle between the mark above 130º and 210º. hmm... with fresh coolant in there and a new stat, the heat will about blister my knuckles though.
+1. my truck never over heated with a 195º thermostat the last few times i went to oklahoma, running 75-80 mph for 1/2 hour to an hour at a time in 110º heat. or when i was putting around oklahoma city in stop and go traffic for an hour or two.
