A 305x70x16 and a 285x75x16 are both very close to 33" tall. The 305 is wider at just over 12", while the 285 is only about 11" wide.

A 305 70 16 and a 285 70 16 are the same diameter tire. The 305 is 12 inches wide, whereas the 285 is 11 inches. The first numbers is the width in mm. Just divide by 25.4.

The only difference between a 285 and a 305, is width.

Um, no... not quite. A 305/70/16 is a 32.8 (~33) by 12.00 inch tire. A 285/70/16 is 31.7 (~32) by 11.22 (~11.25) inch tire.

Its a stupid measuring system but its not complicated... just involves simple math.

The first number is the section width (widest part of the tire, not tread width or rim bead width) in millimeters. The second number is the aspect ratio, which is the section height divided by the section width. So to find the section height, you multiply the section width (the first number) by the second number as a percentage. The third number is the rim diameter in inches.

So as an example, lets go through the 305/70/16:

The section width is 305mm, so divide it by 25.4 mm per inch and you get 12.00 inches.
The section height is 12.00 inches times 70% (or .7), so you get 8.4 inches.
The rim diameter is 16 inches.

To find the total diameter, you have to count the section height twice (above and below the rim) and the rim, so you get 16+(8.4*2)=32.8 inches.

FWIW, a 315 is a 12.5 inch wide tire.
