Question Engine Swap

Hello All ...

Have a friend with a 97 2500, 360, auto transmission. The engine gasped it's last gasp last night plowing. I have an 88 Ram Charger 100 w/ a 318 auto that is heading to the scrap yard, although the engine is still pretty strong.

Will the 318 bolt up to the auto tranny in the 2500? (I did spend a couple hours searching for the answer here, without luck)

I thank you in advance for your advise.

well a 360 bolts right up to a 318, so i dont see why it wouldnt work in the opposite, assuming the tranny is the same that came in the 1500s, but worth a shot imo instead of buying a new 360.

So, what I think you're saying is the tranny bolt pattern on the 360 is the same as the 318? Has that always been the case ... through all years?

it just depends if its a 318 small block magnum it well but if its a 318 mopar small block it might not. a 318 magnum is the same block as a 360 magnum block

Did Dodge offer (or even make) the magnum in 1988?

The tranny will bolt up. Make sure to use the torque converter from the 318 with the 318 engine as one engine is internally balanced and the other is externally balanced and i do beleive the converters are different. Make sure you get the convert seated properly in the transmission.

Thanks everybody for your knowledge.

Perhaps the '88 Ram Charger 318/3 speed auto tranny package should be installed in the '97 2500?

Is there a chance in hell that will bolt up?

Those are two totaly different engines. The LA 318 in your Ramcharger shares little parts with the Magnum 360 in your Ram. Although the 46RE in your Ram will bolt up to the 318 in your Ramcharger, it would be almost impossible to get them to work together. You see, the Magnum engines and transmissions found in 92-01 Rams are controlled by one single computer. That computer controls the sequional fuel injection, other engine functions, and the transmission. You'd just be way better off to re-build the 360 and get another 300,000 miles out of it.
