Default V10 Problems

Im looking at buying a V10 ram 2500 slt. does anyone kno of any specific problems i need to look for now, or that i will need to deal with in the future. It has a 2 in lift with 35,s, 5-speed manual trans, dual flowmaster exhaust with a gutted air pump, 4.10 gears, infinity sound . The truck has 54,000 miles and is a 2002 second generation always garaged... any other problems specific to a 2500 would also be helpful. I am aware of the front end problems the dodge trucks have as i have a 98 1500. with 125,000 miles,

Neither of which are true. That happens on the V8s.

Welcome aboard,

Just a couple of things....I have just about the same truck, '02 SLT+ with V10.

1. Gas mileage of course, getting 11.5 on the highway.
2. I had to change most of the plastic under the hood, shroud, vacuum lines, etc.

My gears have been upgraded to 4.56 from the 4.10's, not sure what effect that will have on 35's. 70 mph runs right at 1950 rpm.

The worst problem by a mile is the mileage. I get about 8 around town. You will probably get better, because that is under my 19 year old right foot. It will pull a freaking mountain though. It really pulls about as good as my diesel. Mine has 154k on it and the only things I have had to do was injectors and it needs the cats replaced. I also had problems with the vacuum lines. I think you will really like it. I love mine. I do believe that some of the very early ones did have a head cracking issue. Keep us posted on it!

Please don't pass on bad information. There were some issues with early V10 heads cracking, but even those were few and far between and not widespread.

One other note, and it is not a bad thing for me. I don't know about everyone else's V10, but mine runs incredibly cool. I live/work in deep South Texas and this thing never seems to get over 180 degrees. Maybe a fan the size of a helicopter rotor has something to do with it, I don't know, but I'm guessing in cold weather the V10 will be slow to warm up. Maybe a thermostat change would be in order north of the 40th parallel......
