only seems to hop a little bit when turning left and in 4 wheel drive... once i took off the wheel and got in there i was able to turn the axel and there was a good inch or 2 of play in the u joint area. I'm guessing thats where my knocking was coming from when I was in 4wheel.

If there was that much "play" in the u joint,It would have came apart a long time ago.A very small amount of "play"(say .5mm)in a u joint is alot.

you are correct... I was meaning that i had some free movment on my hub when I was turning it forward and backwards to make the U joint move... I was thinking they were more directly connected... your right... the guy i was working on it with thought there was a lot of "play" in the joint....

I'm pretty new to the whole automotive mech thing.... bikes/snowmobiles no problem... but have been having nothing but trouble working on this damn truck.

it ended up taking a much bigger impact wrench and compressor to get it off than i have available to me. I have a guy that does work for pretty cheap so I just had him do it while I was out of town this weekend... So i had him do it.... and I drank.

I'm starting to get pissed that I can't do these projects with the tools I have available to me..... But I have a hard time justifying the purchase of these tools that I am going to rarely ever use..... (but they would be nice to have)

It has taken me 30 years to accumulate the tools I have.I bought my first set at 21 years of age,I used my Dad's tools until then. Finally went to Sears and ordered a 200 pc. set with a 22" hand box.I don't remember what I paid for them but I think it was around $30.
