It wanders, no pulling or shaking, its runs like a dream. I has about 1 inch play in either direction turning the steering wheel. With tires straight it drives a straight line for a long distance.
Would they, should they have checked the track bar while looking at the suspension?
Only one inch.

Since then, I have methodically replaced everything I can think of, from the steering wheel to each tire. Another steering column, new Borgerson intermediate shaft, two "rebuilt" steering gear boxes, new track bar, new bushings, new tie rod joints, new ball joints, new bearings (as they wore out, of course). I'm almost to the point of "it ain't gonna get no better". If you find the prob, PLEASE let me know! I've probably got 3 - 4 inches of play in mine.
Thank you.
I will have it worked on some more but cannot continue unless there is a perfectly smooth feeling or connection with tires and steering wheel.

Yes 1 inch play but then he drove it and decided to tighten a screw - and it got worse. Then he went for ride with service manager and decided it was a defective steering gear box they just received from the factory and installed. Then they said to wait for another gear box from Michigan. The new box will be in tomorrow so nighttime will tell a new story. When I spoke to manager this afternoon he expected the box will create *perfect steering.*

It must be allot worse than 1 inch if your calling it a death trap, seems to me you need to buy a toyota they have nice and firm steering just watch out for a stuck gas pedal, no brakes, and the high speed shaking.

and you thought you had it bad

Default wamdering issue

have a 98 quad cab 2500 4x4, the front end started wandering, so i had the ball joints replace, took it in to have alignment. they said steering box and track bar bad. replaced all the above and it still wanders, sometimes alot more then I like. any ideas on things to check for the wandering. I took it back to the shop and was told everything is tight, no issues with parts all within spec. Very confused

with all that replaced, you've already put in a lot of money.
i'd take it back to the shop and have them drive it and check.
"within spec" sounds nice but tell them (nicely) "so far you've replaced a bunch of unnecessary parts and it still drives like ****."

do you still have play in the steering wheel - if so that is the problem.
it could be steering box, or steering shaft (common, and expensive), or steering column bushing (also common).
