Thumbs down My First Ram, Tranny Problem

I just bought a 2001 Ram 1500 4X4 with 115,000 miles, Auto tranny with a 5.2 L engine. The automatic transmission shifts very smooth thru all forward gears BUT DOESN'T HAVE REVERSE and the 4x4 WHEEL DRIVE WORKS GREAT. Whats the problem? I need help and hoping it's not that expensive to repair, I just spent $3,500 on it.

Try adjusting the low/reverse aka rear band.

Don't adjust it yourself if you haven't done so before. Just get your Transmission serviced instead.

I have seen multiple people warning people to not adjust the tranny bands themselves. Is there a horror story to this or what? It is really easy so I'm just curious.

To the O.P. if you don't have automotive experince get it serviced it should be cheap. Have them adjust both bands and change the fluid and filter.

Someone on this forum who shall not be named (PurplDodge) adjusted his bands and killed his transmission. There might have been some others too.

Remove the transmission pan and inspect the rear lever, see if the strut is laying in the pan. Also ck the reverse piston. Its common for the piston to break in half. Or the snap ring to pop out of the groove. There was a recall for the 1989 thru 1992 dakota trucks for a reverse spool valve, and then there was a TSB to replace the spool valve for a reverse buzz on the ram trucks.

The reason it happened to me was because I used a Harbor Freight torque wrench. If you DIY I suggest spending some money on a really good torque wrench.
