The point of the swap is I like the shift process A LOT better. Its way smoother. Mine is a bit*h sometimes and I think a straight shift would work better.

The straight shift can be a PITA at times. You really have to throw the shifter to get the t-case to engage into low range. You really never know if it is engaged until you hit the throttle. This scared me when I was trying to get up my snow-covered driveway the other day. Popped from 4-low to neutral.
Maybe you could e-mail or call Magna (They own New Venture Gear) and see if they know. You could also go to a transmission or off-road shop and ask them. Sometimes Although I doubt the internals are the same, it may be worth the try. http://www.magna.com/magna/en/contact/
If you do decide to change out your transfer case, make sure you get a 231HD case instead of the standard 231D case.

Well, if there's a down and to the right requirement of your transfer case to get it into any gear, then that is usually an internal thing. I doubt you could swap shifter mechanisms and have it work properly.
looking at the spare transfer case/transmission (out of a 95) i have in my back yard, it doesnt look possible. the shifter goes straight into the top of the case, there isnt any linkage but internal. thats probably why its so hard because there is no hydraulic support or linkage to make it smooth, its that handle mashing into gears. im not sure if the 98+ are a linkage type or not, but i would assume so, they are alot smoother, and easier to shift into.
