Ok 35's are not the max for stock axles, and you do not need to regear with 35's, and yes you need a lift to fit 35's.

35's are about the biggest tire to run safely on these trucks before going through parts prematurely, yes you can put 37's and bigger but you run the risks of wearing out parts, like u-joints.

If you would like to keep the power and gas mileage your trucks has now you do need to regear but if you can deal with loss of power, and gas mileage go ahead and put 35's if you decide later on that you want your power back then you can regear

here is the lift on my truck.

i took coils from an 05 cummins 3500.......gained just over 4 inches for the front
for the rear i have 6" blocks. i stacked (2) 3" blocks (welded)
and i also replaced all 4 shocks as they arent really long enouh once you hit 3 inches of lift
i am on 35" pro comp Xterrains and have never rubbed once
now alot of people would deter you from doing a lift like this bc it has no function for offraoding but keep in mind that my truck if mostly show and i dont do anything extreme offroad. if your going to get into offroading you also need to do some swaybad drop brackets, possible long arm kit, drop pitman arm, adjustable trac bar.
personally i love my lift and so do the hundreds of ppl that stop me to talk about it all the time when i take her out. not including the price of the new shocks, i only have roughly 80 $ into my entire 4" lift......your not gonna beat that anywhere

crazy idea, could I cram 35"s under a 3" lift? or would I have to go with the coil spring idea, or a all out 5" lift?

You will notice a decrease in power like I said earlier some learn to live with it and others feel its worth the money to regear as long as you dont drive it like a race car you wont start breaking drivetrain parts.

Lift it get the tires and then you can decide on gears

Sounds like a plan. I guess the regear will be the last thing ill do. It will happen sooner or later. But the 3" lift, could i do it? or would it have to be a 5"?

with a 3 inch lift it "can" be done....however you may rub on for lock turns.
