speed sensor
ok guys heres the scoop. i know from all my symptoms i need a speed sensor. now here is what i need help with, i dont know which one i need to change. there is one in the tailshaft of the trans, and one on the rear axle. obviously these 2 sensors dont do exactly the same things so my question to you all is this........which sensor does what? knowing this will tell me which one i should change. the one in the tailshaft goes for about 18$ and the one in the rear goes for about 50$
im not having any problems with my brakes what so ever, my problm is my speedo stopped working and my trans is a bitch to get it to go into overdrive sometimes. it'll get into overdrive on highway speeds going uphill. once it does get into overdrive......if i remove my foot from the throttle....it comes right back out of overdrive and my rpms shoot from 1600 to about 2900
my abs light was on last year bc i put non abs wheel bearings on my truck and took out the front abs which threw the abs light on so i took the bulb out of the dash
im just trying to fig out what each sensor is for

when i changed the speed sensor in a 03 dakota (9.25 3.55 axle) on the axle, and what the truck was doing was no speedo, brake and abs light on....if your having overdrive issues id defiantly say the one on the tailshaft....but why not do both? i know the one for the axle cost 28 bucks....better safe than sorry...
One on the tranny is your primary one, the one on the pumpkin is a secondary. the speed sensor on your tranny controls the speedometer. Usually if the one on the tranny goes bad the one on the pumpkin isnt far behind.

i had thoughts about that, but EVERYTHING was working fine and dandy and then when the speedo stopped working the OD gave me sh*t. so i figured they were problems tat were related
Yea for whatever reason the one on the transmission effect's the OD also, it wont keep it from enguaging at all times it just will cause it to kick in an out sometimes. I had to replace the one on my tailshaft for my durango a few years ago because of that issue among all the others.
Have you taken it in to get them to see if they can pull codes off of it ? if i remember correctly i do believe that the one on the tailshaft and the one on the pumpkin throw two different codes, but both are listed as SP sensor
