You should really just get the Hughes or the APS and be done with it. I'm sure its not to much more than the stock. Problem is, you could go another 50k miles, or 10k. Can't really put a time/miles on when its going to go again. The two different metals expand and contract a different temps, so it really does a number on the gasket. Do it right the first time my friend.

Not only that, but the bolt lengths aren't correct. Spending a day under the hood of your truck and a little bit on a new gasket won't solve the issue, you're just fixing a symptom.

I agree with Kaldir. Spend the little extra and get the kit. My two cents.

I could add to it and say your head could be cracked. That's known to happen as well

It sounds like I have the same problem. I'm burning a quart like 300-400 miles and I've babied this truck. It's a 99' Sport w/ just 72,000 miles on the clock. How much is the Hughes kit, where do I buy it, and is it a fairly easy DIY?
What else could be damaged because of this and how do I know this is fixed after installing the Hughes kit? Lol. Questions, questions.

Hughes part # HUG 7714

The oxygen sensors and catalytic converters are usually damaged by the faulty gasket.

Damaged to the point of replacement usually for the catalytic converters?

Thanks for the hughes link. So this is an $80 some dollar fix plus a new thermostat? With possible damage to the oxygen sensors and catalytic converters? Thanks.
Sioux Falls, SD? Sweet! I used to live in So.Dak. Went to SDSU in Brookings and then lived in Rapid City. Small world!

It's actually around 135$ if you get the gasket and bolt sets with the plate. If you replace the cat then you should get a magnaflow universal cat (as long as yours is 1 pipe in and 1 pipe out) because they're only 70$ on summitracing.com.
