Exclamation Very weird stalling/misfire/no gas ,sounding problem ! help?

First of all, I have searched and read about 100 postes and cant find the same problem and when I do find a problem, the OP never updates it when its fixed .
97 ,318,4x4 5 Speed Standrd
The problem is still this, I can be driving down the road and it will start to feel like its running out of gas.. then feel like its missing ..then start surging/stalling out ,it gives me just a little time to pull over, and shakes /sputters out. After sitting (or being towed to the shop )it will run fine again for a few blocks or sometimes for a FEW DAYS .
Ive had a new exhaust put on and a brand new CAT, because that was thought to be the problem , they checked my O2 sencers and there fine (was going to just replace them but at $70 each was waiting for more info )
This worked great for about 2 weeks ,now the problem is back .Its showing NO CODES
Had it towed to the shop again last Tuesday, they ran tests and told me it was out of gas ( it was at 1/4 tank... ) because when they put some in it ran fine and still had no codes or CEL.
Iam not a frikken tool I know it was not out of gas !
So its ran great all weekend but this morning on the way to work again the same problem !
and NO CODES still, CAN ANYONE HELP ME ,ITS DRIVING ME MAD and I cant keep taking it in if theres no codes .Has anyone had this problem ?

Thanks guys sorry for the long post

since it sort of dies like its running out of fuel, i'd lean that way instead of an electrical problem.

its possible that your gas gauge is wrong, and the truck is actually out of gas.
its also possible you have water in the gas.
and its also likely that your fuel pump is dying, or maybe the the intank filter is stopped up.

locate the fuel pressure test port on the drivers side of the rail, and rent or buy a fuel pressure gauge. they're not overly expensive. see if you can get one with a long hose that allows you to route it to the base of the hood where you can see it while driving.

test pressure at start up, also while running, and most importantly - when its stalled out. it should be 49 psi +/- 5

ok will go try the pressure test, and was thinking that the filter might be clogged but was a long shot

the gauge is working fine and just filled it up on friday at Chevron ,no water in gas also its been filled up 5 or 6 times since this problem has started

what do you think about the IAC ? could that be a suspect? or would it be a constant?

no. IAC is responsible for idle control when your foot is completely off the gas and the throttle plate is closed. you can rule out the IAC by laying your foot on the pedal and cracking open the plate. you have a different problem where it won't even run at full or partial throttle.

don't want to jump to conclusions but fuel pump (& filter) is likely.

while your out, get a bottle of gas treatment and make sure the tank is about 1/2 full. since its possible that you might be dropping the tank to change the pump, don't fill it all the way up. just make sure you're not out of gas.

run it till it dies, then check it again.
if fuel pressure is good, check for spark at the plugs. (coil)

nope. wait for it to die, then check for fuel and spark. you're losing one or the other. (or maybe both if the ASD (auto shut down) is kicking in).
