Default Custom Air Intake

All
Has anyone built their own open air intake. I know they are out there but can't seem to find a site that tells you what parts you need or ultimately what will or will not fit under the hood. Ultimately I was looking at building a dual air intake for my 1999 5.9L Ram. Does anyone have any experience with this? Shown any proven gains, etc?

just go to your local parts store and purchasse a 14x3 air cleaner assembly make an "S" bolt and use the old school look. Flows just as well as a cold air intake and only like 40 bucks

It is pricey if you want to make a really functional Ram Air box. i have been doing lots of research:

$527 if you get the fitted kit (not for a dodge, but you get the idea)
http://www.spectreperformance.com/#CATALOG.900121

Do it yourself: Using aluminum tubing. The reason is because aluminum is harder and will offer more "boost" from the ram air. Looking at about 1LB+ at 80 MPH.

The air cleaner with dual inlet: 14X3 ($75 plus shipping)
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...=STRK:MEWAX:IT

Then the plumbing:

From what I am thinking, you need these parts: TWO of each except the 24'' tube (1 ea)
22 degree elbow with 6 inch extension 59.99
30 degree elbow with 6 inch extension 59.99
24''tube: 61.99 (cut in half to use for extra plumbing)

Then you need 4 couplers at 11.99 each.

OR YOU CAN JUST GET THE FLIMSY PLUMBING:
http://www.spectreperformance.com/#CATALOG.9752
32.99 per side. Then you need to get reinforcements to it doesn't flop around.
Intake space would be where the tow hooks would come out. Perfect slot. You would need to reinforce it in places so it will not come loose and flop into the fan and throw a belt.

READY MADE FLIMSY TUBING: 244.99

That is the best intake.

Do you think i can use PVC piping as the ducting material? Cheaper than aluminum. I al only thinking about performance. I don't want the flimsy stuff expanding and cutting the boost.

let me know if you do this and how it turns out. I have been thinking about this i have a airaid 4in tube cold air intake but running a dual tube would be better for air flow "my thinking".

Ran the www.ramairbox.com setup for 5yrs prior to adding the Procharger. That ramairbox is the best setup available next to running boost. The alum ducts are the prefered method due to the ridges not being as high & you can compress them so they are essentially smooth inside compared to the rubber ones in the pic that Max posted.

My Indy, 5.9/3.92grs @ 70mph I saw .5-.75lbs of boost on my vac/boost gauge.

Prior to installing it I was using an open 14x2.25" K&N (original K&N fipk for genIIs). Instead of using the 14x3" thats needed for the ramairbox I just used the 2.25" tall filter. Even with the smaller filter than recommended & not sealed that great I still managed to see a .2 et reduction. (was running 14.35-14.5s prior)
With it sealed up better, ducted from the bumpers & adding some efans. Managed to run a 13.99 (fans only gave .08 off ets). Not bad for a stock 5.9 from tb down.

Later on I added the proper 14x3" tall filter & got it sealed much better. Figure I gained another .15 though never confirmed it. (other changes before I got back to the track)

Compared to a stock airbox/filter probably good for .55sec I figured in et reduction.
Most Dak RTs that added them back then (late 90/early 00s) were seeing at least .6 off ets.

Indy nice truck!! Do you need to have an electric fan installed to run the duct work through the bumper?
