Default Alarm System

Well, my truck got broken into last night. Somebody put a small pry bar or a flat head screw driver into the back glass sliding window and somehow managed to unlock the little tab thing. Came out to the truck this mornin and it was wide open with the driver door slightly ajar. Now instead of me waiting in the garage with my 12 gauge tonight, I was wondering what car alarm systems you guys would use. I don't have factory keyless entry or an alarm system so anything would be helpful right now. I did some searching on google and there is just so much stuff and I'm no wiring specialist so everything is a little foreign to me.

It all depends on what you want really. If you are concerned about someone stealing your truck, just use a hidden switch somewhere to kill the starter/ignition/whathaveyou.

If you are concerned about someone breaking into your truck.... an alarm isn't going to help there either, since the alarm won't go off until they are already in.. (and the damage is done.)

if you have stuff in your truck that you don't want stolen....... such as stereo, etc... that becomes a bit more tricky, and alarm might actually help there. But, that is about the only scenario where an alarm makes a difference.

With the rear slider window, you will never be able to really 'secure' your truck. The little plastic latch feller is quite easy to break..... not to mention the glass itself.....

This is one of the reasons my truck still looks like a POS. Psychological Warfare. If it doesn't look like it is worth breaking into, folks wont.

There are a number of car alarm sensors to consider. Trust me, I'm a security professional in this field.

The best two for you would be the standard shock sensor and the microwave sensor (commonly called a dual zone radar sensor).

The first, shock sensor, will set of the alarm if an impact is made to the truck. I have mine set to half sensitivity, and will set off the alarm if I open or close the tailgate.

The second, microwave sensor, will set of the alarm is movement is detected inside of either of the "zones." This means that you would leave your windows open, and if someone sticks their hands inside your vehicle, the alarm is go off.

So, the only way to prevent damage to the outside of the vehicle is to have the shock sensor set to high sensitivity. This won't be guaranteed method, but it's the best you'll be able to do.

PM me if you have any questions. I could make some good recommendations to you for alarms and sensors if needed. If you're slightly electrically talented, you should be able to install this your self if needed.

I never really thought of my truck as being anything worth breaking into. My main concern is my cb radio and all of my work tools, which I'm fortunate that the guy didn't want to steal anything. My ipod was even still in there. Makes me think what the hell the person wanted to accomplish.

Check and see if there is any change left in your ashtray.

Yeah I read up on the shock sensors and what have you. I saw somebody's truck on youtube had a motion sensor so whenever somebody walks near it, the alarm starts to beep. If the person stands there for too long the alarm goes off. I'd like something with a 2 way radio like thing. I've only looked at viper alarm system's and they're kinda pricey but it includes everything you just mentioned.

They probably got scared off, I would be waiting to see if they come back tonight...
I have an excalibur alarm comes with one 2-way remote and remote start, they have the same alarm without remote start too, my friend has it on his truck didnt touch the sensor it came with and its pretty sensitve and is easy to adjust.

It was $100 bucks on ebay and I love it pisses people off when I start my truck and they cant. My neighbor and me installed it, already had an alarm on my truck so I didnt deal with the lock and unlock stuff, took about an hour maybe 2 and was fairly simple just tap into the right wires. Just make sure if you install you get a wiring diagram for your truck from were you buy it, and take your time and before you know it your done.

My favorite theft deterrent is a blinking LED in the dash where it's visible from the outside. It's usually all you need to keep the opportunistic thief moving on to the next easier target.

That said, if you want a real alarm take 98formulaLS1's advice.

i just bought a viper 5901 off ebay for $200 brand new... if you look on ebay you will find a prices a hell of alot lower.... i bought that, plus the tilt sensor (for angle changes as in someone jacking up the truck for towing or stealing wheels and tires) a glass break sensor (obviously the name says it all) there are a number of add ons like the "proximity" or field disturbance sensor which is like mentioned above.... there always more sirens to buy, extra shock sensors... the good thing is, the problem you had last night would be solved, if some one even climbs into the bed and the TILT sensor was sensitive enough, it would feel the angle change of the weight in the bed and go off... pretty good stuff... i litterally just finished mine up 2 days ago, it wasnt too bad to install... it's a little overwhelming when you first look at it, but it wasnt that bad...

I love my system, the extra sensors were also real cheap on ebay... it also has a remote start as well which is an amazing feature... i set aside a few days, took out my seats and took the dash apart and went to work... i went to an empty parking lot to adjust the sensors, and it all works good.. plus it has the 2 way pager remote which i believe you mentioned you saw on youtube.. up to a mile away it gets two-way feed back to let you know whats going on, itll have confirmation messages for lock/unlock, valet mode, doors open, hoods open, etc and when the alarm does the warning tone or goes full blast itll let you know and tell you which sensor was triggered.... its a plus you dont have a factory alarm or keyless entry... alot less crap to deal with

if you decide to go the 5901 route let me know.. ill give you an install chart for what wires to use from viper, and where to put em on your truck and save you a couple hundred bucks for a pro installation....
