8 mpg in city...really?

I have all the things in my signature, and I consistently get 11.5-11.75 MPG in town. Thats because I go rip-roaring everywhere. I have a lead foot, and don't deny it.
Before my upgrades, I was getting around 9 MPG with a blown plenum during the winter. I hope my MPGs will improve after I (someday when $$$ shows up) install my better gears.

Gas went over a buck in 1979 in most places and hasn't been under a buck in a long, long time. Average prices since 1996:

Throw in adjustments for inflation, and you'll see that gas was more expensive in 1982/1983 than today.

NJ has always been a very low cost gas state. Mainly because there are lots of refineries in NJ.
Actually, I remember having an argument with a classmate of mine in 2001. He was from Georgia, and he said that gas prices were cheaper in GA than NJ. He was talking about it being 89 cents per gallon in the late 90s.
