Default 62 mph @ 3500 rpm?!

Hey all,

I drove from Iowa to Missouri today (~400 miles) and after about 200 miles into the trip, if I stopped or slowed WAY down (under 15 mph) and tried getting back upto 65 mph, my rpms were at 3500!! It did this at least 4 times, and I pulled over every time and checked fluid, linkages, etc. Everything checked out fine. After shutting the engine off, and starting again, it would shift fine, until I had to stop again. I could not get it to shift after it started doing this. Even stopping and then going under 45 mph, it would not shift out of some of the higher gears. Pushed o/d off button while this was happening, and nothing changed.

Please help!

Is your trans overheating? I think if the PCM sees high trans temps, it will disable overdrive.

Did your "O/D OFF" light on the dashboard come on at any point, even after you hit the button?

his OD light was probably off. With OD off, when you turn off the car and restart it, the tranny goes back into "OD ON" mode.

I know this because I don'tdrive with OD on in the city or when towing. So I need to remember to turn the OD back off.

your torque converter is not locking up. You need a new TC. Then the dealership replaces the TC, they replace the solenoid as well. So you need a governor solenoid and new TC.

I didnt have any lights on when this would happen. O/D off light would not turn on whenever this happened. How much would tc and gov sensor cost to have done?

Anyone know of a good tranny shop near ft leonard wood, mo? Im not sure if the post has an auto hobby shop where I could do it myself. Im just here for training for 4 months, and all my tools and stuff are in storage. Maybe mine will stop doing this, but I doubt it cause good things rarely happen to me lol.

I'd sure check with MonteC at the top of the forum. It could be one problem, or a combination. My first thoughts since turning off the vehicle and restarting it temporarly eliminates the issues was a clogged filter or cooler. But it could be a selenoid issue.
Did your tranny fluid smell burnt?
